Fly me to the moon
… let me play among the stars! In the world of luxury watches, the Speedmaster from Omega has played an important role as an iconic collector’s piece, at least since its moon landing on the wrist of Buzz Aldrin in 1969. By contrast, it is with the deep sea that we associate the name of the Nautilus from Patek Philippe, which is also considered one of the icons of the stars among watches thanks to its design by Gerard Genta. Further brilliant highlights in the Autumn edition of the watch sale are the Submariner “Single Red” from Rolex, the “1815” from A. Lange & Söhne and the Savonette from IWC.
When Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were the first human beings to walk on the moon in 1969, it was a small step for the two astronauts but a great leap for mankind. It was also a special piece of contemporary history for the renowned watch manufacturer Omega, as Aldrin was wearing a Speedmaster on his wrist, which became the first watch on the Earth’s satellite and thus an icon in the world of watches thanks to the moon landing. The Speedmaster “De Luxe” with reference number 345.0802 that is on offer now bears the engraving “First Watch Worn on the Moon” and is considered a rare collector’s item as its edition is limited to 20 pieces (estimate: €50,000–80,000). It is, moreover, the watchmaker’s first model in white gold – this and its perfectly preserved rhodium dial make the watch a coveted collector’s item.
The iconic design of the Nautilus from Patek Philippe is from Gerald Genta, one of the most eminent watch designers of the 20th century. The most striking feature of the Nautilus – here with reference 3700 / 11 – is its bull’s-eye-shaped case with the “ears” on the side as well as the fluted dial structure, which gives it its sporty-elegant character (estimate: €30,000–60,000). Originally made of stainless steel – a special feature for a luxury watch in this price category – it combines sportiness and the supreme watchmaker’s art of Patek Philippe.
Among collectors the Rolex Submariner “Single Red” with reference number 1680 is one of the most coveted vintage models and is considered a genuine icon of watch history (estimate: €12,000–17,000). Produced in the late 1960s to early 1970s, it was the first Submariner that was equipped with a date and the characteristic Cyclops magnifier lens.
The “1815” with reference 231.031 from A. Lange & Söhne is considered a masterful homage to the roots of the German art of watchmaking (estimate: €20,000–30,000). Named after the year of the birth of company founder Ferdinand Adolph Lange, the “1815” model series represents classic elegance, tradition-conscious design and utmost technical precisions.
The highlights also include the heavy Schaffhausen Savonnette with full calendar, moon phase and moon age, which is limited to 250 pieces (estimate: €8,000–12,000). Reference 5450 belongs to the phase in which IWC produced high-quality pocket watches with precision craftsmanship, often in the style of the late 20th century.
